Spotlight: Settled better in a hood (kept since) when winning over 1m4f at this meeting last year; good second at Ascot (1m4f, soft) in September and denied a prep run before his never-nearer eighth of 18 when racing a bit freely at Royal Ascot (1m4f; still second favourite) six weeks ago; new trip looks interesting (if he settles) and so does last year's peak form.
Spotlight: Unraced on much softer than good; 7-1 and only his second handicap when good fifth of 16 at Royal Ascot (1m6f, good to firm) last time, always close up; in the mix.
Spotlight: 2-5 for current yard after prevailing at Newcastle (1m4f, AW debut) and Hamilton (1m5f, good to soft; by a neck) on last two outings; raised another 4lb but he's getting his act together and, after two attempts last season, another go at 1m6f now looks plausible; has to be in serious calculations.
Spotlight: 4yo who has had only seven races and acts on any going; fourth in 1m4f Group 3 at Newbury on reappearance hinted he may have staying potential; although running creditably, his subsequent 2m Group 3 and 2m4f Royal Ascot handicap didn't really prove his stamina and he now has his first go at 1m6f; whatever his ideal trip may be, he needs some improvement.
Spotlight: Progressive over 1m6f on varied ground last August-October and reappeared with a good second at Epsom in April despite a return to 1m4f; a little disappointing over C&D in May but his yard has had one 4yo handicapper win here this week and no way is this one ruled out.
Spotlight: Unraced on softer than good for nearly two years; did well at 1m4f-2m last spring/summer and career-best form when bang there over C&D and at Newcastle (beaten a neck in 2m Northumberland Plate) on second and third outings this term; overdid it up front on latest outing and should return to form if reverting to former tactics; one to consider seriously.
Spotlight: Sometimes slowly away, including when below form in a handicap at this meeting last year; there were four wins in that campaign, however, culminating in Listed race at Ascot (1m6f, soft) last October; last of six in a Group 3 on recent return but could be a lot more interesting this time.
Spotlight: Ran respectably on soft here two years ago; downgraded from Group contests to handicaps for last five outings, running creditably on first and latest attempts this season; they were over 1m6f and 2m, beaten a neck last time but in just a four-runner race; this event is more competitive.
Spotlight: Markedly progressive overall trained by Natalia Lupini in Northern Ireland, rounding it off on last two outings with fourth of six in slowly run Listed race at Navan (1m6f, soft) in April and always-prominent fourth of 16 in handicap at Royal Ascot (1m6f, good to firm); changed hands since; respected.
Spotlight: Lightly raced brother to top-class Ghaiyyath; Irish 1m2f maiden winner last June but not seen again until failing to make a serious impact this season with varied tactics in a 1m4f Group 2 (on soft; apparently best form), 1m6f Group 3 and 2m Listed race; something of a dark horse on handicap debut.
Spotlight: Wore cheekpieces on last three outings, all on good to firm; won a 1m4f Thirsk handicap on first occasion and he's 23lb higher today thanks mostly to his staying-on sixth in the 1m6f Group 2 Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot; failed to confirm that improvement in 1m5f Newmarket Group 3 on latest start, admittedly not disgraced but that makes others look a bit more solid today.
Spotlight: Has raced only four times on turf, with a soft-ground win on first occasion but lesser shows since, already dropping out when he was hampered in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot last time (50-1; pulled up); reliable and progressive on AW, surging to new heights with his two handicap wins (1m6f/2m) this March/April, but he's now 8lb higher than for latest win.
Spotlight: Usually held up; acts on soft; better than ever this season, winning at Haydock in May; creditable fifth there on latest outing; showed this term that he stays 1m4f but this first attempt at 1m6f adds some uncertainty.
Spotlight: 5-14 in France for Andre Fabre, with five seconds too and they included one in a Group 3 and one in a 1m6f Listed race (both on very soft); bought for 220,000gns in January, followed by a never-dangerous last of five in Listed race here (1m4f, soft) in June but he presumably needed that run.

There may be uncertainty about what the ground will be but FRENCH DUKE delivered big runs over 1m4f on good to firm ground and soft going on his last two starts last year and today's step up in trip, with a run now under his belt this season, may enable him to resume his improvement. Subsequent, who may not look the best handicapped, goes very well on soft ground but Master Builder is preferred to him as the main danger. Barnso, Aeronautic and Sam Hawkens are also in serious calculations.[Richard Austen] Show less
